Waste Watchers

Waste watchers what can we do?

By Waste Watchers/Zak and David
Through the years that we have been using plastic it has been stockpiling up in to piles and that was called landfill
And it has reached a massive height but in this doc we aren’t trying to warn you we are trying to tell you how to stop these stockpiles

Solutions :
  1. Don’t use plastic bags
  2. Use boomerang bags for people  if they forget their bags in the supermarket
  3. Use reusable or metal drink bottles not plastic one
  4. Instead of using the plastic rolls for fruit use the mesh ones instead
  5. Don’t put milk/can lids in the recycling bin

2018 Waste Watchers

Yesterday Waste Watchers made a visit to the EcoSort at Parkhouse Street. After that we went to the EcoShop on Blenheim Road to see where many of the things delivered to the EcoDrop end up and where people can buy them. Chris Duggan, the Christchurch City Council Educator, taught us about reducing, reusing and recycling our waste. They have very sophisticated machinery to sort our recycling into corrugated card, newspapers, mixed paper, glass, metals and plastics. Here are some of our group at work and some helpful signs.

Recycling Tips
  • Wash out all containers before putting them in the yellow recycling bin
  • No food scraps in the recycling bin or the rubbish bin only the organic bin
  • Only clean cardboard and paper in the yellow recycling bin. For example if you have a greasy pizza box it goes in the green bin
  • Don't buy the milk bottles that are white and not see through as it confuses the sorting machines at a recycling factory
  • Don't put your recycling in bags keep it loose
  • When you are at the supermarket take your own reusable bags
  • Soft plastics go in the New World bin
  • Minimise waste by buying in bulk
  • Buy fresh fruit not canned or in plastic
  • Instead of glad wrap, use ziplock bags which can be used again, and reusable containers
  • All lids and caps go in the red rubbish bin including ice cream lids

We are going to trial Bokashi buckets in Navigators 3. It is a way of composting but it doesn't stink so we will keep it in the classroom. If it's successful we will use it all around the school. We got given some Bokashi mix and buckets. Here is a video explaining what they are.

Matt Tipa and Policon( means polystyrene, injected, concrete)

On Tuesday we were really lucky to have Matt come to talk to us about his passion. As you may know Christchurch uses a lot of polystyrene so Matt and his friend Dimiti decided to start a business to reduce polystyrene. They created some bricks like lego but bigger blocks. What you use them for is you can stick them together and make a fence or a house.
They are hoping to build houses with their blocks. They are wanting to make there first house late next year as a show home and if it works they will make homes for people to live in and the homes will not be as expensive as they are now. They are also hoping the houses will be just over half the price of a normal house. While he was talking to us he handed around different types of polystyrene like the  polystyrene that they had transformed into a brick. It was polystyrene mixed with cement and water that had been evaporated they also had some polystyrene in a inside. There were some of the balls that you can put in a beanbag. There was also some more of the bricks but not in the shape of a normal brick. Matt and Dimitri are located at 10 settlers Cres, Woolston, Christchurch.  push to see website

Have you seen the little triangles made out of arrows surrounding the numbers from 1 - 7 on plastic?
They tell you what type
The Recycling Factory in Wellington

of plastic it is! - Did you know until now, we had to send our plastic overseas to be recycled, but now... New Zealand has a Recycling Factory all of its own! It is located in Wellington.___________________________________________________________________

You should buy things from an  Eco Shop. If you buy things from the Eco Shop you are reusing items so they don't have to go to landfill. It is on Blenheim Rd, Riccarton, Christchurch

Two Eco Heroes

Last Tuesday Scarlett brought in some fruity bags. These are bags that you can reuse time after time at the supermarket to put your fruit and veges in, instead of using plastic bags. Thomas has some more bags here that do the same thing. Well done Waste Watcher. It is so good to see you taking on learning and action to try and make our planet a better place.

11/4/4
Today we went looking for rubbish again, this time we looked  around the amphitheatre and the junior area playground. This is what we found!!

We noticed there was a lot of chip packets. How about buying chips in a big packet and splitting it into small amounts and put in a sectioned lunch box or a plastic bag that can be reused many times before throwing out.

We then started finding out about what goes in what bin. We started a plan for a poster to put on bins.

We went to the playground to pick up some rubbish and we brought it inside and we were disgusted by all this rubbish and also how much was there. There were chip packets, plastic and metal.

We also did a flow diagram of what happens to green waste we saw that they had to pull out a lot of rubbish and that is very disappointing so i think we could do much better.

Trip At The Eco Drop

On the 21 of March the Waste Watchers went on a trip to the Eco Drop, when we got there we went into a building, Chris (the teacher) walked us up a flight of stairs. When we got up we walked into the education room, there was a window in the room, we looked out the windows, there we saw work men control the loaders, they were moving the rubbish into different tunnels to make compost. After that Chris told us about a compost life cycle, then we played a really fun game, it was paper, scissors, rock but mixed with the compost life cycle. We all had lots of fun and we did lots of other fun things. We also learnt the importance of making sure we are reducing, reusing, recycling  before we put  our rubbish out.
